Wayne Higby

Wayne Higby has been entranced by art since a very young age, but it wasn’t until he took a trip around the world that his interests became absolute. After visiting the Heraklion Archaeological Museum on Crete in 1963, Wayne began his lifelong exploration and study of ceramic art. As a student, he studied painting, sculpture, ceramic art, and art history. In 1965, he received his BFA from the University of Colorado. He earned his MFA from the University of Michigan in 1968. He is also recognized as an Honorary Alumnus of Alfred University.

Wayne was invited to join the faculty of the New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC), School of Art and Design in the Division of Ceramic Art in 1973. Alfred University was then (and is still now) considered to be the #1 school in America for ceramic art – a factor that greatly influenced Wayne’s decision to become an A.U. professor.

Wayne has taught at Alfred University for the past 44 years as Professor in the School of Art and Design. Additionally, he is the Director and Chief Curator of the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum, the Robert C. Turner Chair of Ceramic Art at Alfred University, and a member of the Board of Trustees.

Wayne enjoys teaching art students, traveling the world, and working in his studio. His creations are internationally recognized. He is currently facilitating exhibitions for a museum devoted to ceramic art.
