Noted professor Mario Affatigato delivers Engineering Seminar on his glass research
Mario Affatigato, professor in the Physics Department at Coe College, spoke Thursday (April 20) at the weekly Engineering Seminar, hosted by Alfred University’s Inamori School of Engineering.
The presentation, titled “The Electronic Conductivity of Vanadate Glasses,” centered in Affatigato’s ongoing research in glass, which focuses on exploring the relationship between the structure and optical properties of glassy materials, with a particular emphasis on oxide glasses like borates, vanadates, and samples containing heavy metals.
Affatigato has supervised more than 90 undergraduate students in various research projects, which have included innovative techniques such as laser-induced modification and aerolevitation. He has been recognized for his research contributions, receiving several awards and research grants from institutions such as the National Science Foundation and the Research Corporation.
He is a fellow of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) and the UK Society of Glass Technology, as well as a Research Corporation Cottrell Scholar. Currently, he holds the Fran Allison and Francis Halpin Professorship at Coe College, and is also the Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Applied Glass Science.
Affatigato received his Bachelor's degree from Coe College in 1989, and his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1995.
