IEA laying foundation for future international collaboration

Miranda Metcalf, director of the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University, recently visited the Institute for Science and Ethics (IWE) at the University of Bonn's Sustainable AI Lab to present research relating to intersections of of AI and art in the Division of Expanded Media in the School of Art and Design.


Miranda Metcalf, director of the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University, recently visited the Institute for Science and Ethics (IWE) at the University of Bonn's Sustainable AI Lab to present research relating to intersections of of AI and art in the Division of Expanded Media in the School of Art and Design.

Metcalf met with project leader Professor Aimee van Wynsberghe and her team to share examples of artworks and philosophies being explored at Alfred. Discussion highlighted the work of graduate students in the Electronic Integrated Arts program in the Division of Expanded Media,

She also met Georgian-born, Amsterdam-based new media artist Irakli Sabekia and saw the installation of his responsive artwork at the IWE, "Network Proximity Atlas". The work collects real time data on internet speeds in various countries and repopulates a map of the world based on the outcomes and illustrating global connectivity disparities.

"This was an opportunity to lay the foundation for further collaboration between the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University and the IWE at the University of Bonn,” Metcalf explains. “Such partnerships offer Alfred University students a chance for international connections that serve not only to broaden their professional lens but also expand their understanding of the complex world in which we all live."
