Foster Lake

Expanding opportunities for students and faculty

Since acquiring Foster Lake in 2002, Alfred University faculty, staff, students and the surrounding community have enjoyed the beautiful 220-acre site for recreational and educational purposes.

Foster Lake offers swimming under lifeguard supervision, fishing, bird watching, canoeing and small craft sailing. Recreational trails, picnic areas and limited camping sites circle the serene lake. The adjoining woods are moderate to heavy, thanks to reforestation efforts that began in 1950.

Increasing Safety and Accessibility

Alfred University seeks to increase safety and accessibility by expanding permanent parking, creating structures, and supporting ongoing care of trails and lake pathways. These investments will improve green space access and ensure structures and grounds are well-maintained. By connecting students to one of our greatest classrooms — the natural environment at Foster Lake — we empower them to understand, celebrate and protect the natural world. Studies show that nature also improves learning.
